Client Case: Cedric Warren

On December 10, 2024, a Wyandotte County judge vacated the wrongful murder convictions of MIP client Cedric Warren and his also innocent co-defendant, Domonique Moore. They walked free the next day after serving more than 15 years of incarceration for a crime they did not commit.

No physical evidence linked Cedric to the February 13, 2009, homicides of Larry LeDoux and Charles Ford— DNA evidence excluded him and fingerprints found at the crime scene were not his. Instead, the entire case against Cedric relied on the testimony of a single eyewitness.

Wyandotte County Judge Aaron Roberts ruled that Cedric’s constitutional rights were violated when the State suppressed critical evidence undermining the credibility of its sole witness. This evidence, known by the State, showed that the witness suffered from severe mental illness, including paranoid schizophrenia, and that he suffered from delusions. Indeed, immediately after the witness falsely identified Cedric, Kansas City, Kansas police took him witness directly from the interrogation to a mental health facility, where he was involuntarily admitted. This fact was never disclosed to the defense.

The prosecution also withheld evidence that the same witness had previously been declared incompetent to stand trial in a criminal case. Records show that the Wyandotte County District Attorney’s Office had previously requested a competency evaluation for the witness, and the court ruled he was unfit to participate in legal proceedings. Yet, prosecutors chose to rely on his testimony against Cedric without disclosing his mental health history or credibility issues, in violation of Cedric’s constitutional rights under Brady v. Maryland.

After 15 years of wrongful incarceration, Cedric Warren is finally free. His conviction was overturned due to prosecutorial misconduct, but his journey to justice has come at a heavy cost. Support his road to rebuilding his life by donating to Cedric’s GoFundMe: Support Cedric Warren.
